Hass avocados are in season in New Zealand from July to April. They’re your perfect all-rounder with a nutty flavour. Hass are slightly smaller than other varieties and change colour when ripe.
Reeds are usually larger, round, and boast a rich buttery taste. They stay green when ripe and have a smooth skin. Reeds are available from March to May.
GEM™ avocados are a new variety, exclusive to The Avo Tree. They’re creamy and buttery like a Reed, with the skin colour change of a Hass. GEM™ are in season from around August to December.
All the avocados we eat in Aotearoa are grown right here in New Zealand. They do well in warmer climates, so you’ll find most avocado orchards in the Bay of Plenty and Northland. The orchards we pick from are all located in the Bay of Plenty.
Your avocados will arrive green and unripe, freshly picked from the tree. This is the safest way to avoid any bruising along the way. We package each and every avocado safely in a nest of untreated NZ Pine wood wool to give them the best protection.
Like many fruits, avocados are influenced by their environment, their variety, and the time of year they’re picked. Use the ‘date picked’ stamp on your box as a reference, but always let colour and softness be your ultimate guide. Yes! Ripe avocado can be frozen in halves, chunks, mashed or puréed. Add lemon juice and seal the avocado in a tight container to minimise browning. Alternatively, pop the whole avocado in the freezer, peel and all, and lock in the freshness for up to 4-6 months. Thawed avocado tastes a little bit different with a smoother and oilier texture. Perfect for smoothies!
When it comes to avo sizes, we’re all about flexibility. Choose between mini, medium, large and jumbo. Each box includes a slight variation of sizes, all falling within the weight ranges listed below. From time to time, we may need to use slightly smaller fruit. When that happens, we’ll always pop in extras so your total box weight is exactly as it should be.
HASS:
Mini avo = 130g – 160g
Medium avo = 160g – 220g
Large avo = 220g – 290g
Jumbo avo = 290g+
Please note these are the picked weights when avocados are unripe. You can allow for 10-20% weight reduction as these go from unripe to semi to fully ripe.
REED:
Small avo = 180g – 220g
Medium avo = 220g – 260g
Large avo = 260g – 300g
Jumbo avo = 300g – 400g
GEM:
Medium avo = 160g – 220g
Large avo = 220g – 290g
Jumbo avo = 290g+

These boxes are priced at market rate and offer the best value. While avocado prices fluctuate throughout the season, the cost of the box stays the same, and the number of avocados inside will adjust accordingly. Check the product description for the most up-to-date details.
We carefully nestle avocados in untreated NZ Pine wood wool packaging and ship them with NZ Post to ensure safe delivery.
As a general rule, we aim for 1-3 days depending on where you live and when you place your order. If you place your order before midday on a weekday, our super-efficient team will have your avocados picked, packed and shipped on the same day.
For North Island deliveries, you can expect your box to arrive on the next working day. For South Island addresses, you can expect your box to arrive in two working days. For rural deliveries, we aim to have your order delivered within three working days.
Shipping prices vary depending on your location and the weight of the box. Shipping starts at $3.25 for North Island deliveries and $6.99 for South Island deliveries. Shipping costs are automatically calculated at checkout based on your address and order details, not included in the box price. Please note rural delivery will be an additional cost and calculated at checkout.
Absolutely. You’ll receive an email from NZ Post with your tracking number once your order has been dispatched. You will receive another email once it has been safely delivered.

Our boxes are specially designed for each avocado size and quantity, so the fruit fits snugly and safely in its bed of wood wool. Because of this, shipping can’t be combined on orders with multiple box sizes or varieties.
We pick to order, which means there may be a short time gap between your boxes being collected — especially when ordering both Hass and Reed together, as these are picked from different orchards day to day. Even when ordering two Hass boxes, there can be a slight delay as they’re packed separately and wait for the next courier pickup.
You’ll receive separate tracking emails confirming the collection of each box.
An avocado subscription is the most convenient way to enjoy fresh, high-quality avocados ongoing. With a subscription to The Avo Tree, you’ll receive an automatic recurring delivery to your home, office, or hospitality venue as often as you like. You can choose the box size, dispatch day and frequency that suits you, and pause or cancel at any time.

Like any other fruit, avocados go in and out of season. And just like other produce retailers, our prices fluctuate with supply and demand. Avocado prices are slightly higher at the start of the season, and will gradually decline as the season progresses. If you ever want to check the price of your order before it goes out, log in to your My Avo Tree account before your regular dispatch day and click My Subscription.
No one likes to go without avo on toast, especially on holiday. You can update your subscription delivery address by logging in to your My Avo Tree account, then clicking on the ‘subscription’ tab on the left hand side. All editable options for your sub are under this tab.
