GEM® is a special kind of avo. Less common in New Zealand and a little harder to come by, they’re a real treat when you spot them. Lucky for us, The Avo Tree is one of the few suppliers bringing these beauties to Kiwi avo munchers.
Description & Taste
GEM® avos bring together the best of two favourites. Rich and buttery like a Reed, they ripen just like a Hass, with pebbly skin that turns dark when ripe. Pear-shaped and slightly larger than a Hass, GEM® avos really are the best of both worlds.
Their semi-compact trees naturally protect fruit from the elements and are known for producing reliable crops year after year. Better still, GEM® avos hold beautifully on the tree, giving growers more control over when they’re picked and ensuring they’re harvested at their best.
Season
GEM® avos are typically available from mid-spring through early autumn.
Nutritional Info
Packed with heart-friendly monounsaturated fats, GEM® avocados are loaded with fibre, potassium, vitamin E, B vitamins and folate. They also help your body absorb more nutrients from the foods you enjoy alongside them.
Best Enjoyed
From guacamole and salads to sandwiches and smoothies, GEM® avos are happiest served fresh. A squeeze of lemon, a pinch of salt and you’re away laughing. Ripe avos will keep at room temperature for a couple of days, while fully ripe fruit can be refrigerated to extend freshness.
A Little History
Developed by University of California researcher Gray E. Martin, the GEM® avocado is often mistaken for Hass thanks to its exceptional quality. Today, it’s grown around the world in regions with mild climates and is prized for its consistent crops and creamy texture.
