3 immunity-boosting ingredients (that also make a delicious tea)

Immunity Tea Ingredients

Even in the pre-pandemic days (remember those?) maintaining a healthy, well functioning immune system was important. Not just for warding off colds & flu’s, but for protecting your body from harmful substances, germs and cell changes that can make you unwell.

As long as your immune system is ticking away smoothly, you don’t even notice it’s there. But if it’s up against particularly aggressive bacteria or virus, or isn’t functioning as well as it could be, our bodies will let us know about it through various signs and symptoms.

While we might think supporting our immune system is complicated, simply adding a few immune-boosting ingredients to our diets can help to keep our defences strong. Here are 3 immunity-boosting ingredients that help to keep your immune system firing, all of which you can find in our Immunity Avocado Leaf Tea.

1. Bacon Avocado Leaf

Naturally high in protein, fibre, minerals, and antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties, avocado leaves are your one-stop-shop for whole-body health.

Bacon Avocado Leaves are high in Quercetin, a natural plant flavonoid found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains. This potent natural antioxidant works to support our overall health and wellbeing, from heart health to immunity, and bone health to anti-inflammation.

While the dietary fibre in Bacon avocado leaves help aid digestion and support your gut and metabolic health, the flavonoids and high levels of quercetin work to flush out toxins and harmful free radicals. This can help reduce inflammation in the body that can lead to more serious illness over time, such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.

2. Tulsi

Also known as holy basil, Tulsi is an adaptogen that’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Adaptogen is the name given to a group of herbs that help to build resilience and ‘adapt’ the body’s response to stress and fatigue.

As a natural immunity enhancer, tulsi is known for its ability to help ward off respiratory illnesses, like colds, bronchitis and asthma. The powerful herb also contains anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that work to reduce tension in the chest, and in turn, ease coughs and soothe sore throats while helping your body expel phlegm. It’s seriously hard-working.

3. Cinnamon

An immune-boosting superstar, cinnamon is packed with antioxidants and antibacterial compounds that help fight off infections, viruses and drug-resistant fungi.

Cinnamon also disrupts a nasty type of bacteria called a biofilm, which coats medical devices and wreaks havoc on hospital-acquired infections.

If that wasn’t enough, thanks to it’s powerful anti-inflammatory compounds, cinnamon can also help to reduce PMS symptoms such as menstrual cramps and nausea too.

Your introduction to the Bacon avocado leaf

bacon avocado leaf tea

When we set out to make New Zealand’s first Avocado Leaf Tea, we knew exactly where we needed to go.

Our regular Hass and Reed trees weren’t going to cut it. The leaves of these varieties are harmful when consumed, so we looked to source the leaves of a lesser known variety to us Kiwis—the Bacon avocado.

What is a Bacon avocado?

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit to Mexico or any country in Latin America, there’s a good chance the guacamole you had with your tacos was made with the delicious, buttery flesh of a Bacon avocado.

Bacon avocados are native to Mexico. They’re oval-shaped like our good friend Hass, but have a glossier, waxier skin with faint speckles. Unlike their name, they taste nothing like bacon. They contain less oil than Hass avocados, but are equally delicious, with a smooth, creamy texture.

The leaves of the Bacon avocado tree are 100% safe to use in avocado leaf tea. They also smell and taste delicious. Win!

Health benefits of Bacon avocado leaves

Bacon avocado leaves are naturally high in quercetin, a plant flavonoid which is found naturally in a variety of plants and vegetables. Some of the known benefits of quercetin include:

  • Immune-boosting: The potent flavonoid quercetin supports the body’s natural immune system thanks to its  anti-allergic and anti-viral activity.
  • Antioxidants: Quercetin can also protect against environmental causes of free radicals such as smoking and environmental pollutants.
  • Supports bone & tooth health: Quercetin has been found to increase calcium content and improve bone quality by increasing bone-forming activities in bone cells and improving healing in bone defects.
  • Supports heart health: Quercetin may improve the health of blood vessel cells and improve blood flow through arteries.
  • Anti-inflammatory: The anti-inflammatory effects of quercetin may help to reduce swelling, control blood sugar, and help to prevent heart disease.

Our avocado leaf tea blends

All of our Avocado Leaf Tea blends are made with the avocado tree leaves of the Bacon variety—we never use any Hass or Reed avocado leaves in the production of our teas.

Avocado leaves have a reddish hue and a distinct earthy, rustic taste, while never bitter. Naturally caffeine-free, we’ve loaded each tea blend with the good stuff to compliment its smooth flavour. Cinnamon and tulsi to boost immunity, chamomile and passionflower to calm the nervous system, and lemongrass and ginger to support digestion.

Quercetin and the health benefits of avocado leaf tea

Quercetin and the healing benefits of avocado leaf tea

It’s no secret we believe the humble avocado holds the key to overall health and wellbeing.

And why wouldn’t we when it’s so simple to use the whole fruit? The flesh is delicious to eat, the oil and seeds are great for your skin, and the leaves are amazing to drink. Yep, that’s right. Avocado leaf tea is here—and it’s incredible.

After picking and drying some special NZ grown Bacon avocado leaves (a Mexican variety) and blending them with nature’s best ingredients, we went ahead and created three unique, healing avocado leaf tea blends that support whole-body wellness.

But what’s the deal with avocado leaf tea? Is this just another millennial fad? The answer lies in the healing powers of quercetin.

What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a natural plant flavonoid found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains. This potent natural antioxidant works to support our overall health and wellbeing, from heart health to immunity, and bone health to anti-inflammation.

Avocado leaves just so happen to be high in quercetin. These incredible leaves are full of minerals like immune-boosting zinc, bone-strengthening calcium, and magnesium and potassium. This helps promote a healthy heart by enhancing blood circulation, lowering blood pressure, and reducing hypertension.

Calming Tea

Avocado Leaf Tea with Chamomile & Passionflower

Avocado leaf is naturally high in quercetin, a potent natural antioxidant associated with an impressive resume of health benefits, including stress relief.

We’ve crafted this calming blend using the queen of calm herself, chamomile, renowned for its soothing properties thanks to a powerful antioxidant, apigenin. By targeting specific receptors in the brain, apigenin helps to decrease tension and anxiety, making us feel drowsy and blissfully sleepy in order to support a good night’s rest.

Enter passionflower, nature’s nervous system nurturer and all-round stress-soothing warrior. This powerful botanical works to boost the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in our brains. This mood-regulator helps lower our brain activity by levelling out the neurotransmitters that cause excitement, alleviating anxiety to promote a more restful sleep.

Avocado leaf tea for digestion

Digest Tea

Avocado Leaf with Lemongrass & Ginger

Among the superabundance of health benefits found in avocado leaves is digestive support. Helping to reshape our gut microbiota, the querciten found in avocado leaves is a powerful anti-inlammatory molecule that helps to ease disrupted bowel movements.

Lemongrass is a staple in any cleansing diet, which works to flush toxins and reduce any water retention that may lead to bloating. This fragrant tropical grass variety has been used for centuries as a natural diuretic, keeping our digestive functions under control by soothing and settling the stomach.

No digestive support aid is complete without ginger, a timeless anti-nausea remedy and go-to spice for healthy digestion. Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols, two compounds that help to increase food absorption and gently stimulate the emptying of the stomach. Great for alleviating a full tummy after a big meal.
